The Institute of the Middle and Far East of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow was established on 1 October 2010 as a result of the transformation of the Independent Department of Middle and Far East Studies. The Department was founded in 2000 by Professor Andrzej Kapiszewski. The second director of the Department was Professor Adam Jelonek who is the current director of the Institute. The Asian Studies programme at the Institute of the Middle and Far East entails an extended study of international relations, cultures and social traditions, political practices, religion and customs of the Middle and Far Eastern countries. Particular focus is put on learning and understanding of events currently unfolding in the area. This type of studies, known as area studies, is especially widespread and popular in Western Europe and the United States. We are the first ones to aim at the development of this type of studies in Poland.
